Scaling up to root real change in fertilizer

Niklas Åström, CEO of Arevo.
When Impact Loop first reported on Arevo in March 2024, we’d just secured €6.8 million from investors including Industrifonden and Fort Knox.
One year later, we’ve done it again — closing another round together with our existing investors.
The funding enables us to scale operations and expand internationally,” says Niklas Åström, CEO of Arevo. “It’s about moving faster toward replacing conventional fertilizers with something that actually works with plant biology, not against it.
The bigger picture: fertilizer tech on the rise
Fertilizer has quietly become one of the planet’s biggest climate challenges. It accounts for roughly 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions — almost double that of air travel.
The world is finally realising what we’ve believed from day one:
the biggest climate opportunity in agriculture starts underground.
The science behind the soil
Our innovation is rooted in the research of Professor Torgny Näsholm at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences — a global pioneer in plant nutrition.
Arevo’s technology uses arginine phosphate, an amino-acid-based form of nitrogen that binds naturally to soil particles. Unlike mineral nitrate, it doesn’t wash away with rain.
The result:
-
Stronger root systems
-
Healthier, more resilient soils
-
Lower nitrogen leakage and emissions
In other words, more growth, less waste — a fertilizer that feeds plants and protects the planet.
Strengthening our board for global growth
As we scale up, we’re also levelling up our leadership.
In March 2025, Maria Wetterstrand — former Green Party spokesperson and now CEO of Miltton Europe in Brussels — joined our board.
Maria’s background and experience complement the board extremely well,” says Åström. “She brings valuable EU-level insight into regulation and policy.
Other board members include:
-
David Sonnek, CEO of Navigare Ventures
-
Diana Henningsson, Deputy Member, Navigare Ventures
- Martin Gunhaga, representing Fort Knox
-
Henrik Lenning, Deputy CEO at Stora Enso
-
Anna Haupt, representing Industrifonden
Together, they bring a mix of science, policy, and industry experience that will help Arevo grow stronger roots internationally.
From forests to front lawns
This spring, Arevo also launched a new product for homeowners — a sustainable lawn fertilizer based on the same arginine-powered technology that’s transforming forestry and farming.
It’s a complementary product,” says Åström. “Something for lawns that delivers visible results while doing right by the planet.
Because whether it’s forests, fields, or backyards, one thing remains true:
real change starts from the root.
