Arevo appoints Georgios Foufas as CEO to lead next phase of international growth

georgios foufas succeeds niklas åström as the ceo of arevo

Arevo AB announces that announces that Dr Georgios Foufas has taken over as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Niklas Åström.

  • Commercial leadership for Arevo’s next phase. Dr Georgios Foufas joins from Exeger, where he was Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy CEO. He succeeds Niklas Åström, CEO since 2023, who will continue to support the transition.
  • Taking Swedish innovation global. Georgios will lead the next phase of Arevo’s international expansion. Having grown from Nordic forestry into agriculture and horticulture across Europe and South America, Arevo now works with partners including Corteva across EMEA and Kekkilä-BVB across the Nordics and Baltics.
  • The mission: cut the overuse of mineral fertilisers. Arevo’s plant-first crop nutrition, rooted in forestry science, targets the world’s staple crops: corn, soy and wheat. In independent trials, Arginex Corn delivered up to 4.3% more grain yield with up to 30% less nitrogen, while Corteva added Arginex Soy to its European seed treatment portfolio.

Umeå,12 October 2026 – Arevo AB, the Swedish agtech company behind the arginine-based crop nutrition technology Arginex, today announces that Dr Georgios Foufas has taken over as Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Niklas Åström. Niklas Åström will continue to support Arevo through the leadership transition, ensuring continuity for customers and partners.

Georgios joins from Exeger, where he was Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy CEO, responsible for sales and partnerships. He joined in 2013 from the silicon solar cell industry, following several years in academic research, and built the commercial organisation as the company grew from ten to around three hundred employees. He signed customers including 3M, Vusion and Kapsch, alongside technical and strategic partnerships with ARM, Qualcomm, ABB and Softbank. He holds a PhD in Financial Mathematics and an MSc in Engineering Physics from Chalmers University of Technology.

Rooted in science, proven in the fields

Arevo’s science started in the forest. Research in Umeå showed that trees can take up nitrogen directly in organic form, including amino acids such as arginine, rather than relying only on mineral forms such as nitrate. That insight not only changed how textbooks describe plant nitrogen uptake but also became Arevo’s patented technology, Arginex. Arginex is a high-purity, single-compound formula combining arginine with phosphorus to deliver stable, slow nutrient release around the seed or root zone. Used by forestry companies in their standard planting programmes, Arginex has fed over 700 million plants across three continents.

Arevo is now taking the same principle to the world’s staple crops. Arginex Corn, applied as a seed treatment, delivered up to 4.3% higher grain yield with up to 30% less standard nitrogen fertiliser across independent trials in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and Brazil. In soy, Arginex Soy trials showed 4.5–6.0% higher yields compared to untreated controls. Results for Arginex Wheat will follow shortly. Corn, soy and wheat together form the core of Arevo’s ambition in arable farming.

Niklas Åström served on Arevo’s board before becoming CEO in September 2023. Under his leadership, the company built the foundation for its mission: to cut the overuse of mineral fertilisers with a plant-first alternative that works at the root. That foundation is already carrying weight. In July 2026, Corteva added Arginex Soy to its European soybean seed treatment portfolio. With Kekkilä-BVB, Arginex is moving into Nordic and Baltic gardens.

Leading Arevo has been a privilege. We set out to prove that crop nutrition can work with biology, not against it, and this team has done exactly that – in the lab, in the field and at the negotiating table. I have complete confidence in the people taking Arevo into its next phase of growth. The technology is proven, the partnerships are established, and above all, there is a strong team in place for Georgios to build on,” says Niklas Åström.

“Sweden is extraordinarily good at inventing technology that matters, and taking it out to customers around the world is what I have spent my career doing. Arevo has a technology with the potential to change how crops are nourished, and strong partnerships already taking it to market. The company is now moving into scale-up and global commercialisation, which is where my experience is most useful. I look forward to working with the team, our customers and our partners to take Arginex into more markets and crops,” says Georgios Foufas, incoming CEO of Arevo.

About Arevo

Arevo is an agtech company redefining crop nutrition from the ground up. Rooted in science and built commercially for agriculture, forestry and horticulture, its mission is to reduce dependence on synthetic fertilisers and support more sustainable cultivation practices with zero nitrogen waste. Based on decades of research, Arevo’s patented organic nitrogen technology, Arginex – where arginine meets phosphorus – enhances a plant’s natural ability to absorb nutrients and water while supporting beneficial soil microbes, resulting in stronger, more resilient plants that better withstand environmental stresses.
