From research lab to garden: Arevo and Algomin launch sustainable fertilizer for home lawns

What happens when groundbreaking plant research meets the everyday need for a greener lawn? The answer is Frodigare Gräsmatta – a new product from Arevo and Algomin (part of Finnish Kekkilä-BVB), launching at Elmia Garden 2025.

The technology behind it is based on decades of research at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), where researchers showed that plants don’t only take up nitrogen in the form of nitrate and ammonium – but also the amino acid arginine. That knowledge now forms the foundation for a new generation of fertilizers with lower environmental impact and higher efficiency.

“We are excited to take the next step together with Algomin to make this research accessible to more people. The fact that the same technology previously used in agriculture and forestry can now reach every household is a breakthrough,” says Niklas Åström, CEO of Arevo.

Frodigare Gräsmatta makes it easier for homeowners to contribute to the transition:

  • Research-based technology makes nitrogen more available to plants – the most common problem with organic fertilizers is uneven nitrogen supply, while mineral fertilizers often risk being washed away.

  • Consumers can feel confident – it’s enough to fertilize once at the start of the season and then only every 6–8 weeks.

  • Grass receives the nutrition it prefers, resulting in steady growth and a stronger color.

“We see growing interest from consumers who want a green and sustainable lawn without guilt over the environment. Frodigare Gräsmatta is a concrete step in that direction,” says Lova Holm, Senior Category Manager, Hasselfors Garden & Algomin.

The product will be manufactured at Arevo’s factory in Umeå, ensuring short transport chains and local production close to the market.

Frodigare Gräsmatta will launch in an easy-to-use spray bottle that covers 250 m², designed to suit both homeowners and professional users.
