A century ago, Scandinavia’s forests were in trouble — logged hard, thinned out, and shrinking. Today the region exports more sawn softwood than almost anyone on earth, and its forests hold more timber than at any point in modern history. That turnaround wasn’t luck. It was built, root by root.

Why is Scandinavian forestry considered world-leading?

Scandinavian forestry leads because it rebuilt a depleted resource into a growing one — and proved it with a hundred years of measurement. Sweden’s standing timber volume has roughly doubled since the 1920s, reaching about 3,347 million cubic metres on productive forest land. Norway’s standing volume more than tripled over the same century, from around 300 million to over 1 billion cubic metres. Finland’s growing stock climbed from 1.5 to 2.5 billion cubic metres in just the last 50 years. Three countries, one pattern: harvest less than you grow, and prove it.

What did Scandinavia get right that others didn’t?

The region made regeneration the law before most countries had a forest policy at all. Sweden’s Forestry Act of 1903 was the first in the world to require replanting after felling, and the obligation still stands — regeneration must be completed by the third year after harvest. Norway backed its rules with the world’s oldest national forest inventory, running since 1919. The principle is blunt: you don’t get to take a tree without putting the next one in the ground. Over a century, that discipline compounds like interest.

Ownership matters too. Most Nordic forest is held by families and small private owners — in Finland, non-industrial private owners hold about 60% of the forest. People who plan to hand a forest to their grandchildren manage it differently than a balance sheet does.

How much does Scandinavian forestry plant each year?

Sweden alone plants roughly 370 million seedlings across some 170,000 hectares every year. Every one of those seedlings passes through a nursery, and nursery practice decides how the next rotation starts: root architecture, nutrient reserves, and the vigour to survive the first brutal seasons on a clear-cut. This is where forestry is won or lost — a 70-year rotation stands or falls on how well a seedling roots in its first two years. Sweden keeps growth ahead of harvest by a wide margin: forests add around 120 million cubic metres a year while roughly 90 million are felled. The gap isn’t slack — it’s the margin that lets the resource keep building while the industry keeps running.

How big is the forest economy in Sweden and Finland?

Big enough to anchor both economies. Sweden is the world’s third-largest exporter of sawn softwood and fifth-largest exporter of pulp, shipping out roughly 90% of its pulp, paper and board production and about 75% of its sawnwood. Finland — the most forested country in the EU at over 75% forest cover — earned EUR 12.1 billion from forest industry exports in 2024, around a fifth of its total goods exports. For nations of 5–10 million people, those are outsized numbers, and they rest entirely on how the forests are managed.

What does the science of boreal soils tell us?

Northern forest soils broke the textbook. Research on boreal forests showed that trees don’t wait for microbes to convert organic nitrogen into mineral forms — they take up organic nitrogen, especially amino acids like arginine, directly through their roots (Näsholm et al., 2009). Follow-up work found that soil actually supplies forest plants with mainly organic nitrogen (Inselsbacher & Näsholm, 2012). That discovery — made in Scandinavian forest soils — is now reshaping how seedlings are fed. Swedish forest nurseries using arginine-based nutrition have cut nitrogen leaching by up to 80% while growing seedlings with stronger, better-branched root systems.

Can other regions copy the Scandinavian model?

The rules can be copied; the patience is harder. What transfers is the core loop: measure honestly, regenerate immediately, and treat the seedling as the start of the value chain rather than a cost line. What matters most is starting at the root — literally. Regeneration law forced Scandinavia to get serious about seedling quality, and seedling quality is a root-zone question: give young trees the nitrogen form they evolved to use, and they establish faster, waste less, and endure more.
